This is not actually a picture of Danica but it is a girl with a hand over her face so you wouldn't have known. Chuck's songs really lift the spirits after a slow day at work.

It's been too long. But we're back with a show featuring Kate aka Pollination Population, a Denver based singing, guitar playing Kate. There is some dissing of Reggae on this show but lets make it clear: if you play me Lee Scratch Perry or some Specials or The Beat, then I would be more than happy... As it was, things were different...

Super Bright Show returns tomorrow

The first show of a new season starts tomorrow Monday the 24th of August. Listen live to KRCX on the iTunes. Our show is an hour of the best new music with some classics thrown in for good measure. Look out for live performances by local acts starting tomorrow.

This will be the Super Bright Show's second year at KRCX so in theory we should be more professional and there should be absolutely no dead air... in theory.

SBS supports Herring

One of my favourite comedians, Richard Herring, recently featured in an unflattering article in The Guardian. My advice is to just listen to his fantastic podcast where he intermittently reveals sophisticated critical thinking imbetween hilarious if childish humour about babies made of faeces and other such things. Andrew Collins is the other voice in the podcast who is a talented journalist/DJ that puts the author of the offending article to shame.

One would hope that lazy journalism like that of Brian Logan, will not be blamed on the blogging revolution. Bloggers generally write opinion pieces that can be lazy and downright stupid, yet journalists who have the audacity to put themselves forward for careers in writing, should have the good grace to properly research their subject matter. If Brian Logan considers Richard Herring a racist after watching his 'Hitler Moustache' show, then Brian Logan does not get it and should not be writing about comedy for a national media organisation.

Rant over... or maybe. It struck me that Herring will ultimately be happy with Logan's shoddy journalism because he will undoubtedly gain more media attention for his act which champions comedy as a tool for defeating fascism.

Then I became despondent, realising that in so many ways, creative ideas can be misconstrued by those who weren't listening properly or people who were not interested enough to take the comedy seriously. Many people would consider that a contradiction-in-terms and yet anyone who has truly listened to Douglas Adams' HitchHikers Guide to Galaxy or who has carefully watched the Life of Brian will know that comedy can be both lightening and enlightening. The Logan-Herring debate reminds me of the Cleese/Palin - Muggeridge/Bishop of Southwark debate. Muggeridge and the Bishop clearly hadn't watched the film properly. Cleese makes the point that ultimately, Python won the battle and we have progressed as a society. I hope that Herring's clever attack on fascism will prove to be a similar victory for civilisation.

New Shows on the Horizon

The shows have been sparse to say the least over the Summer. The fact is that on a small liberal arts College campus, the Summer months can be devoid of student life. It seems unfair to ask guests onto our show when the campus is dormant and the students are in Ohio, Missouri, and Washington but not North Denver.
On August the 24th the place will come back to life and so will our show. This year threatens to be even better than the last as we have become more connected with Denver's music scene. Last year we had a performance from the city's best artist of 2009 as heralded by Westword and the Denver Post.
I think that proves that we know the talent. The Summer has been filled with showcases and festivals but we look forward to new work by our favourite locals. Time is close to releasing his next album Naked Dinner. Buy the CD, when its released in early August. We will have him perform in the studio for that event. Naked Dinner features work from the talented Damon Jevon who is now based in the Mile High City.
The aformetioned Ian Cooke is also working on new material.
It looks like Meese are going to be the next Flobots and as such will disappear from our radar as they attempt to go national.
I am growing tired of Summer and its mosquito bites, thuderstorms and allergies. Give me the cold any day. In Colorado, autumn doesn't start in earnest until October and that is when I shall breathe easy again. For now we will wait, and find consolation in the benefits of Summer.

Another large wet and dark cloudy blob of moisture sits atop just about the entire state of Colorado and I am feeling glad that I will be leaving for a vacation no less. That does mean that unless the J-Turn can entice a guest presenter onto the show, there will not be a show. So feel free to do something else with that hour.

Watch it rain at Roland Garros where presumably God is trying to dissuade people from playing tennis on strange volcanic surfaces.Listen to Brakes ~ Touchdown. Much better than the podcast.

Pitch some horseshoes with a strange family member. Don't play too hard or you might get a horse shoe in the eye and be forced wear an eye patch for the rest of your life. Amusing at first but the novelty will wear off. That same feeling you get when listening to the podcast.

Become a member of the paparazzi. You will be loathed by everyone else but there does seem to be a group mentality, the feeling of being one of the guys. That feeling you usually get from listening to the podcast.

Learn your cuts of meat including dog meat with these butcher shop style plates. It should give you an empty morally relativistic feeling. Much like listening to the podcast.

Cat Stevens is ice cold. His icy cold comments about the relatively lukewarm Coldplay borrowing music from Foreigner Suite for their track Viva La Vida are nothing but a cheap attempt at gaining publicity for his own 2009 tour.

Ain't that the truth.

Bob Dylan's video for Beyond Here Lies Nothin' is a little Tarantino-esque. To sum up, it features a couple who beat the excrement out of each other, stabbing and running each other over, before resolving to have a big wet kiss at the end of it all.

Trolls will have their Showcases

We will be broadcasting at 11.30am on Thursday's during the Summer months. If you're in England then you can tune in at 6.30pm to listen live. I know some of you will still be on that train commuting home at that hour, in which case you can download the shows from the archive. Over the Summer we're going to have some guests from music, visual art and journalism on the show.

We will be giving reports from the Westword Music Showcase in June and the Denver Post Underground Music Schowcase (DPUMS or DUMPS) in July.
These showcases are accompanied by awards and the folk at Westword do a pretty good job of picking their top acts. Born in the Flood, Paper Bird, friend of the show Ian Cooke, KRCX guests Vonnegut, all won gongs in 2008. The Ron Miles quartet won in 2007 which shows that the Westword still does a good job covering Jazz. But we ask, what about Hip Hop MC Time? And its about time that Debajo Del Agua were honored. However, these things are always contentious and if you're good enough you'll find other ways to get exposure for your act, just look at The Flobots. Poor Dave Herrera of Westword has taken some flak from the good people of Denver for his shortlists. You can't please all the people all the time.

"Did someone in Boldtype fu** your mother?" he continued. "How is it that everyone of the bands on this list for punk have opened and will continue to open for Boldtype yet they are not on your list. We will be seeing just a few of these bands at Redrocks....oh yeah and Boldtype. I'm going to find out who the dumb mother fu**er that made this list is, and send all the members of Boldtype his/her mothers address so they can give you what I can only imagine being two very stinky middle fingers up u fu**ing douchbag!!

"Oh, and to your boss," he went on. "The person that made this list makes you, the westword, and all of your employes look like the dumbest fu**ing people related to the music industry. From someone that works for a company that advertises with you I am suggesting to not only my boss but to anyone else that I come in contact with to pull all business with you untill I see this morons head on a stick or Boldtype on the list. Peace, dumbas*"

I feel like even Sid Viscious had more class than this over-zealous fan of Boldtype.

Dave explains in his article that he had to concede on this one and shortlist Boldtype for the Punk category. I can understand if the boss stepped in and made Dave back down, but otherwise, we really shouldn't be negotiating with internet trolls. Even if this troll is a powerful one, which is doubtful, given that the muck flying around in comments sections is usually thrown by those who are impotent in the real world, Dave should have retained his remaining shred of dignity by simply not reading the comments at all.

But after some consideration, perhaps they should introduce some criteria:

1) Do these bands/artists play shows regularly?

2) Have they recorded music for sale in record stores or on iTunes?

These are pretty simple criteria that could prevent accusations of bias.

Digression over, I fully expect to have a great time at both events and with any luck we'll find some local acts that are willing to spend some time with us on the show. Enough thinking.

Rumours are circulating that Brett Stakelin is preparing to appear on the SBS on Tuesday the 24th of March. I can neither confirm nor deny.... you know the rest. When the Shy Guy himself comes aboard the SBS, there will be some audio content as a result of such an embarkation.

In other news, co-presenter of the SBS, and real music critic in waiting, Jason Horodyski, has started writing a music blog that threatens to be far better than this one. :(

I can console myself in the knowledge that life isn't fair and this isn't a meritocracy, so there may be life in this old blog yet.

a trip back home provided an opportunity to sample some Adnams Broadside. the brew commemorates a naval battle with the dutch just off the East Anglian coast. it is a hoppy ale but not as dark as some currently found in the US. the lighter brown colour is somewhat reassuring.

the following day i had an IPA from the Harvey's brewery in Lewes. it was a more straightforward texture than the Hop Ottin's IPA and went down very easily.

the beers from the south of England seem to have less bravado than the craft brews from California. the emphasis is on a pleasant drinking experience rather than the challenge of appreciating something brewed for aficionados.
